Vihiga County in Kenya, is a rural community and home to one of the highest population densities with 1,033 people per square kilometer compared to the national average of 66 people per square kilometer affected by high rates of HIV/AIDS infection. The region is populated by a young and dynamic demographic with 46% of people being below 15 years of age, and widowed women who are limited by social and economic resources.

Vihiga County has many public secondary schools that boasts high form one (equivalent to 9th grade in the USA) enrollment rates. Unfortunately, despite this achievement, these schools are significantly under resourced leading to poor performance in sciences, mathematics, limited access to ICT literacy, and low secondary completion and tertiary education enrollment rates.

Vihiga Youth and women often struggle to find employment due to a lack of basic work skills and experience, caused by insufficient basic education, costly vocational training, and lack of access to affordable technology. These challenges are further amplified by societal issues like poverty, substance abuse, and gender-based violence, as well as difficult family circumstances.
